Study Nook Adds Life to extended Kitchen

NO ROOM FOR A STUDY? TRY ADDING A STUDY NOOK!

This kitchen had space for lots more storage by extending into the living room area. The owners desperately needed a study space for their computer and files but there was no more room in the house to locate a study anywhere! What was their walk- in robe was being used as a study and it wasn't working! So what to do when there's no space to put a study but there's room in the kitchen?

See the below original kitchen photos to see how cluttered and out dated the kitchen area was.

Create a study nook with new kitchen cabinets that blend the old with the new. This can be tricky, as you don't want to end up with two cabinetry areas that don't relate. You need to make it look seamless and like it had always been there. Clever design and choice of cabinetry colours can achieve this and you can extend your cabinets to make it look like an extension of the original.

The island bench was removed as it was a strange shape, a triangle kind of shape and the location in the middle of everything, meant it made manoeuvring in the kitchen a problem. Appliances, such a toaster were in the corner and the congestion to get to the kettle etc became a problem. They needed an appliance cupboard external to the main kitchen triangle. This way the kids can make a snack without intruding on mum in the kitchen prepping dinner. Some new overhead LED down lights complete the modern look.

Although the original kitchen had a Corian bench top it was easy to find a laminate in a colour that closely mimics the original Corian, so on first glance you cannot tell it's something else been used. Adding wood grain units to extend into the study nook/appliance area meant that the units added in the living area did not look too 'kitchen-like'. They appear more like
furniture. The new study nook has a long desk area with power points, overhead storage and two full height cupboards to hold all the files and paper work. The appliance cabinet has a handy bi-fold door that can be shut to cover up any mess inside. The breakfast bench now extends into the kitchen in one straight line, drawing the eye and looking much neater than before. There's room for the kitchen stools and big drawers on the other side. The overall affect is a modern look in the kitchen with storage solutions and better functionality. The
owners love it and it appears as if it's always been there.
